A Roparunteam has a maximum of eight runners. These runners are divided into two groups that relieve each other every four and a half hours. The Roparun course is 520 kilometres from Paris and 560 from Bremen. This means that every runner has to run for over 65 kilometers in about 45 hours. Over a marathon and a half with little sleep!
According to the regulations, each runner must be accompanied by two cyclists continuously. They ensure the safety and the route for the runners. There are four cyclists in our team, who cycle half of the course. An achievement in itself, because they also have to adjust themselves to the pace of the runners. Day and night, under all weather conditions.
To take care of the whole team, we have our own catering team. More than twenty people, who are continuously in motion for 45 hours, eat and drink a lot. Everything is prepared during the weeks prior to the run. The catering team also takes special needs into account and ensures enough variation. A tough job.
The physical performance that runners and cyclists deliver, demands a lot of their bodies. Therefore, we have a team of experienced sports masseurs with us. They make sure everyone stays fit and they also keep a close eye on the health of the other team members. A responsible task.
All these people and all the necessities need to be transported. That’s why we have our drivers and navigators.
The drivers of the support vehicles also make sure that the encampments are set up and cleared away for each break. They are the lubricant of the team. They take care of all that needs to be done, to make sure everything goes according to plan.
The van drivers work together with the navigators to make sure the runners can alternate in good spots and that this is done safely.
